In this series, we will introduce the athletes who have already confirmed their intent to participate in the 11th Gyulai István Memorial – Hungarian Grand Prix.

Pascal Martinot-Lagarde. ""The 29-year-old hurdler (12.95 PB) won the European Championships in 2018 in Berlin in a final which featured Balázs Baji who came in eighth. One year later, the French athlete won the bronze medal in the World Championships in Doha (13.18). He competed and came in fourth in the final at the Rio Olympics where Omar McLeod (13.05) won beating former Dr. Spiriev-Bojidar award winner Orlando Ortega (13.17.).

Interestingly, his brother, Thomas Martinot-Lagarde is also a sprinter, who specializes in the 110 metres hurdles. Thomas made it into the final of the Moscow World Championships in 2013 where he finished seventh. Their parents – both born in ivory Coast – beat several national records the athlete revealed to Olympic silver medallist Ato Boldon in one of his interviews.

Pascal is active on social medial and likes to joke around. He captioned one of his Instagram posts by saying the key to success is dressing to the colour of the track.

""Naturally, 110 metres hurdles Hungarian national record holder, Balázs Baji (PB 13.15) is also going to compete at the 11th Gyulai István Memorial – Hungarian Grand Prix.

The Hungarian sprinter has recovered from his injury and is getting ready for the season without any pain or discomfort and is ready to fight to qualify for the Olympics. In his first run of the outdoor season, he clocked 13.98 in heavy headwind at the 47th Paulinyi Jenő Memorial. Balázs will also participate in the Continental Tour Bronze on June 5 at the Grosics Gyula Stadium.

Baji Balázs set the current national record for the 110 metres hurdles at the Gyulai István Memorial.

Two-time Olympic and four-time World Champion, Christian Taylor (PB 18.21m), who has been the meet record holder since 2019, will also return to the competition.

That year, he also earned the Dr. Spiriev-Bojidar trophy and if all goes according to plan, he will compete at the Hungarian Grand Prix for the seventh time. Last year, before the event, he mentioned how much he missed the fans. Christian was there at the very first Memorial (17.06) and in 2012 also (17.30) and won the competition in 2018 (17.64) and 2019 (17.93).

Osaka’s World Champion, Bahaman high jumper, Donald Thomas is also set to return. Thomas achieved his personal best at the Gyulai István Memorial in Székesfehérvár in 2016 when he flew over 2.37 meters on his third attempt, beating Ukrainian Bogdan Bondarenko (2.35). Donald appears to be preparing for the season in good spirits: he posted a photo on Instagram on May 10, where he seems to be sitting at the steering wheel of a yacht.

Elvira Herman (PB 12.64) also plans to travel to Székesfehérvár.

The European Champion of the 100 metres hurdles has been successful at all levels: she won the U20 world and European Championships and the U23 European Championships with a meet record with such a large lead, that she was barely aware of what was going on behind her.

She is a four-time national champion in the 100 metres hurdles and three-time indoor champion in the 60 metres hurdles.

""Lithuanian World and European Champion, two-time Diamond League winner, Andrius Gudžius will not miss the competition either. Last year, he finished second behind Sweden’s Daniel Stahl.

Andrius has been winning national championships in his home since 2017 and he already has six gold medals from the nationals. He could have an interesting battle against Hungarian János Huszák, who won the European-cup in Split a few days ago (65.35).

In the case of Swiss Mujinga Kambundji, if we are counting outdoor and indoor national championships, she is up to 23. Her personal best is 10.95 in the 100 metres and 22.26 in the 200 metres. She earned the bronze medal in the 200 metres in Doha and was part of the 4X100 relay team which broke the Swiss national record (42.18). She also won four Diamond League competitions. Mujinga has not yet competed outdoors this season, but according to her Instagram, she is counting her steps before her first run.

Gréta Kerekes is a returning guest at the Grand Prix and she would like to compete this time as well. The athlete of Debreceni DSC-SI began the year very well as she won the indoor national championship – her fifth– in the 60 metres hurdles, but she has nine national championships to her name if we include outdoor titles also. Gréti, who won the bronze medal in 2019 at the European Games, has a personal best of 12.93 which he achieved two years ago at the Gyulai Memorial competing against the likes of Nia Ali, Sharika Nelvis, Christina Clemons or Luca Kozák. She is also active on social media, asking interesting questions.
