Last year, New Zealand’s Tom Walsh lost his sponsorship contract with Nike during the spring training for the Tokyo Olympics. At the Gyulai István Memorial, the world champion shot putter chose a spectacular way to advertise the freed-up advertising space.

“Space for rent” was the message on the front of the New Zealander giant Tom Walsh’s t-shirt throughout most of the 2021 season. The world-class athlete was first seen in Auckland standing in the throwing circle wearing a t-shirt saying “sponsor wanted”. The unfair treatment of an athlete who won three of the four major world events between 2016 and 2018 and finished as bronze medallist at the fourth, the Rio Olympics was explained by Nike with cutbacks due to the coronavirus.

The 30-year-old shot putter won the World Indoor Championships in Portland in 2016 and Birmingham in 2018, and also stood on the top of the podium at the 2017 World Outdoor Championships in London. In the meantime, he has become a solid thrower over 22 metres, which has put him in the top at every event he has entered.

This was the case at last year’s Gyulai István Memorial, where he still had to wear this unusual shirt. In Székesfehérvár, he proved that only a few people can fly the shot as far as he can. For example, in the history of Hungary’s most prestigious one-day event, no one had ever done it before, so his 22.22m performance not only won the event, but also set the competition record.

His momentum carried him through to the Tokyo Olympics, where he finished third in an incredibly high quality final with 22.47m behind two Americans, Ryan Crouser and Joe Kovacs.

His personal best is 22.90m, set in the final of the extremely close Doha World Championships in 2019. Joe Kovacs won the gold medal at the “desert show” with 22.91 metres, followed by the silver medallist Crouser, who, like Walsh, also threw 22.90 metres. However, the second best attempt of the American, who has since become a world record holder, was better (22.71 metres to 22.56), so the silver medal went to his rival.

There is still no information that Walsh has found a sponsor, but he has started to promote his own company, Walshot, a sports equipment company, even more heavily on his jersey. His joint project with Ryan Whiting, also a two-time world indoor champion like him, mainly produces discus and shot put balls.

A few days ago, Walsh missed the podium by 21 centimetres in one of the most spectacular World Championships finals of all time, but his 22.08m put him alongside three other US medallists over the magic mark in Eugene. On 8 August, he arrives to Székesfehérvár as title holder, but this time he will also face Olympic and world champion and world record holder Ryan Crouser.

This will be one of the most anticipated battles of this year’s Gyulai Memorial, which will also be a must-see among many other individual stories!

Last year, New Zealand’s Tom Walsh lost his sponsorship contract with Nike during the spring training for the Tokyo Olympics.
