The 2022 World Championships have turned out to be mixed for Nia Ali. While a fall in the first heat of the 100m hurdles ended her World Championships, her partner in life, Andre De Grasse, led the Canadian relay team to victory with a tremendous run in the 4x100m.

The example of 33-year-old Nia Ali is a perfect example of how it is possible to be a good athlete after having a child. A few months after the birth of her first son, Titus Maximus in 2015, she successfully defended her world indoor championship title and went on to win the silver medal in the 100m hurdles at the Rio Olympics.

In Portland, the then newborn baby stole the show from his mum, who gave a speech and even did the lap of honour after her great performance with him in her arms.

Her father is not Nia’s current partner Andre De Grasse, but Michael Tinsley, silver medallist at the 2012 Olympic Games. In 2018, Yuri Zen was born as their daughter with the Canadian world star. Having a child brought her luck again, as she won the 100m hurdles at the Doha World Championships, where she was ranked among the ten fastest of all time with a time of 12.34 seconds.

She missed the 2021 Tokyo Olympics completely, as her third baby, Kenzo, arrived just two months before the event. But his partner De Grasse was there and won the gold medal in the 200m.

“As I am growing as a parent, it helps me grow as an athlete,” she says. “Being able to manage a household, it just gives me a whole new perspective at training and the way I go there – I’m able to compartmentalise now so much better, I am able to build on the lessons I learned as a parent and bring them to the track. It has been an amazing journey and I’m blessed to still be out there.”

“It’s a lot to do with perseverance and patience. The range (in her children’s ages) – seven years to newborn, and how newborn always changes. New toys, new activities, the way you raise a child, the way you parent. The methods that people use, they change, so I’m always learning and finding something new,” says Nia Ali in an interview before the 2022 World Championships.

Her children bring her enormous energy not only for training but also for racing. Preparing for the World Championships at her homeland, she ran a 12.59 back in March, albeit with a tailwind of 3.7 m/s. In April she repeated it to the second under normal wind conditions. Then, coming over to Europe, she finished in the top 3 in Ostrava, Hengelo and Rome.

She was looking forward to competing in a major event on home soil again after her 2016 World Indoor Championships title. After all, her whole family could have been there at Hayward Field, which was a huge motivation for her. However, clearly De Grasse had the better of the dream couple, thanks to his dizzying turn as the last man standing for the Canadian 4×100 relay team against the USA, which was rewarded with a gold medal.

For Ali, the World Championships had started a few hours earlier that day, but it didn’t last long. She stumbled in the penultimate hurdle in the first heat and then fell, unable to finish the race.

Her links with the Gyulai István Memorial go back to the very first race in 2011, when she finished 2nd in Puskás Ferenc Stadium in 12.78. She finished 4th in 2014, and won the most prestigious Hungarian one-day meeting in 2016, shortly before the Rio Olympics. She finished 7th in 2017, and then 2nd in 2019 with a time of 12.63 seconds.

The latter is the best time she has achieved in Hungary. She could easily need even better than that on 8 August to stand a chance against Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, who won bronze at the World Championships. For two disappointed hurdlers, a win at the Memorial could be a small consolation.
