More Olympic and World Champion stars to compete at the Gyulai István Memorial

In just over a month, one of the world’s best one-day athletics meetings and the most prestigious one in the region will take place in Budapest at the National Athletic Center. The Gyulai István Memorial – Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix is returning for its 15th edition, and alongside the previously announced global stars, several new elite athletes have recently confirmed their participation.

Spectators visiting the National Athletic Center on August 12 can look forward to an unforgettable experience, as many of the sport’s top names will be competing up close.

In the men’s 400 metres, American Vernon Norwood, a two-time Olympic and four-time world champion in the relay, and fourth place finisher individually at the World Championships, will line up against strong challengers. These include Muzala Samukonga of Zambia, an Olympic bronze medallist and African champion, as well as Hungary’s own Patrik Enyingi, who has a bronze from the World Indoor Championships in the relay and placed seventh individually. Notably, he equaled the Hungarian national record in the 400m at the European Athletics Team Championships in Madrid this June, which he now shares with Attila Molnár.

The men’s shot put promises excitement as well, with world champion and three-time world indoor champion Tom Walsh of New Zealand stepping into the ring, along with American Roger Steen, an indoor world silver medallist.

In the men’s high jump, fans will see former world champion Donald Thomas from the Bahamas, who originally excelled in basketball, while in the long jump, Sweden’s Thobias Montler, a silver medallist at both the European Championships and the World Indoors, will also be competing.

Sweden will also be represented in the men’s 800 metres by Andreas Kramer, a world indoor silver medallist. In the 3000 metres, Hungary’s national record holder and 8th-place finisher at the European Indoor Championships, István Szögi, is already confirmed to race.

Turning to the women’s events, the 400 metres will feature Dutch star Lieke Klaver, an Olympic and world champion in the relay, and an individual silver medallist at the World Indoor Championships. In the 100m hurdles, Olympic champion and three-time Memorial winner Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico returns again this year. Hungarian fans will also be cheering on Anna Tóth, a two-time U20 World Championship bronze medallist, U23 European bronze medallist, and national age-group record holder.

What a lineup – and organizers have promised that even more big names will be announced soon! August 12 will truly be a celebration of athletics, and it is well worth planning a visit to the National Athletic Center.
