They are coming | Part 8
In this series, we will introduce the athletes who have already confirmed their intent to participate in the 11th Gyulai István Memorial – Hungarian Grand Prix.
Christina Clemons (PB 12.51) will compete in the 100 metres hurdles. The indoor World Championship silver medallist is in fantastic form – she set her personal record on June 20 in Eugene. She competed 13 times this year and never ran worse than 12.92.
She will compete against Puerto Rican Jasmine Camacho-Quinn (PB 12.32) who is currently eighth on the world rankings and is set to compete at the Olympics as well. She set the national record in April in Gainesville and she also won the Diamond League in Florence this year. The competition is stacked in the 100 metres hurdles as she will race against Sharika Nelvis, Nadine Visser, Taliyah Brooks, Elvira Herman and Luca Kozák.
European Champion Zharnel Hughes (PB 9.91) will join the 100 metres field. The Jamaican born British sprinter is often heralded as the next Usain Bolt. He trained at the prestigious High Performance Training Centre after getting a scholarship from World Athletics and he worked with trainers such as Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake and Warren Weir. He goes by the nickname swift and is third on the world rankings.
The women’s 200 metres will feature 4X100 and 4X400 World Champion Shericka Jackson (PB 22.05). She will go up against the like of Shaunae Miller-Uibo, Dafne Schippers and Mujinga Kambundji.
We will see 2017’s 4X400 World Champion Jereem Richards in the men’s 200 metres. He is ninth on the world rankings and faced incredible hardships to get into the world’s elite. He could not get into Alabama College because of financial reasons, so he returned to her family. He continued training while working as a full-time personal trainer.
Maksim Nedasekau is coming to Székesfehérvár as well. The Belarusian high jumper won the indoor European Championships in 2021, but has also won an U20 and U23 European Championship. He is a four-time National Champion, is third on the world rankings and was busy with training during the pandemic as well.
One of the biggest stars of the world Michael Norman will compete in the 400 metres. The Californian born Norman ran the third fastest time ever in this distance (43.45) and has run the best indoor 400 metres ever with 44.52. He clocked some incredible times in the shorter distances as well – 9.86 in the 100 and 19.70 in the 200 metres. He is in excellent form as he won the American Trials with 44.07 which means he qualified for the Olympics. As his twitter handle suggests, he is not just a 400 metres specialist.
